Through the Woods

Through the Woods is an award-winning third-person Norse horror adventure which has been released through steam on the 27 th of October. The press release said “if you are looking for a game to put you in the perfect mood for Halloween, look no further than Through the Woods”. Well … the people from Antagonist and 1C Company surely made us curious with that statement!

When I did some further research, I found that the game actually started as a school project, created by 5 people. The project got quite some attraction through Kickstarter and since the preview and review version were out, the people from Antagonist received some awesome feedback. Luckily the team was able to finish everything on time for Halloween, the timing could not be better for a horror game,” according to Dan Wakefield, Antagonist’s founder and CEO.

About Through the Woods

Through the woods is a third-person Norse horror adventure which takes place in the forest somewhere on the Western shore of Norway. As a player you play the mother of Espen, a young boy, and you are enjoying a few days in a cabin near the lake with your son. As a player you experience the adventure through the mother’s eyes. After a small introduction and some story about you and espen, you witness Espen being kidnapped … and that’s when the real adventure begins. Of course, as a mother, you do everything you can to find Espen back, and you try to track down your son by following clues he left behind in the woods. During your travels you will also encounter many other things and clues which are heavily influenced by Norse mythology and Norwegian folk tales. I won’t be telling you a lot more about the story, except that you will find yourselves alone in the dark forest, chased by strange things, hearing strange sounds and only having a flashlight at your disposal!

Graphics and Sound

I have to say that the people at Antagonist did a great job with the graphics and especially the sounds in Through the Woods. I have personally been playing the game with a headset on, and the graphics and amazing sound effects really give you the immersion of being alone in a forest. We all know that feeling you get when you hear something in the dark and your mind starts to imagine what could have been producing the sounds you just heard. It only takes a few seconds for your imagination to turn a tiny rabbit into a menacing strange creature. Well … that’s the feeling I’m getting when I play the game.

At one occasion, I was so immersed into the game, looking around to see what made a sound and suddenly I almost jumped over my desk when my wife came in the room and tapped on my shoulder from behind me. The graphics and story really pull you in, but personally I think the sound effects just add a little more dimension to the whole game.

 Conclusion

Well, be now I’ve finished playing through the game, and every play session got me hooked. The game is really well done, and I’m sure that I’ve learned a bit more about norse Mythology and Folk tale. I’m really looking forward to more games like these, and i definitely hope that the people at Antagonist will keep creating these awesome games!

The only thing that bothered us a little bit was the voice acting in English, but maybe the Norse voice acting was way better?
